Liability, Comprehensive, & Collision Coverage

Auto or car insurance policies have two parts. The first part of the policy is the liability section, which covers your financial responsibility when accidentally injuring others or damaging property while driving. Some amount of liability coverage is required by most states, including Maryland.

The second part of auto insurance covers the car itself: comprehensive coverage reimburses losses from fire, theft or other perils; collision coverage pays to repair losses caused by an accident. Often this coverage is mandated by leasing companies or banks. There are also ancillary medical, car rental and other coverages which vary by state.

What factors influence the cost of auto insurance?

The price you pay for auto insurance depends on several factors such as:

  • Your gender, age, and marital status
  • Your geographic area
  • Your annual mileage
  • The age, make, and model of vehicle being insured
  • Your driving record including accident history
  • Your credit history

Utilizing high deductibles on the physical damage coverages can help reduce premiums. If you carry umbrella insurance, you must be sure that you carry the required amount of basic liability insurance to avoid a gap in coverage for a serious accident.

What discounts are available to Erie® Insurance customers to help reduce rates?

Multi-Policy Discount
If you insure multiple cars or have multiple policies with Erie® (life insurance or home policy plus auto insurance), discounts could apply. Erie® offers multi-policy discounts from 16% to 25%, depending on your state where you insure your auto and home with us.

First Accident Forgiveness
Everybody deserves a second chance, right? Well, Erie® offers First Accident Forgiveness, meaning you won’t be surcharged the first time you’re at fault in an accident after you’ve been an Erie® customer for three or more years. (The three-year wait doesn’t apply in all states.)

Diminishing Deductible Option
You haven’t filed any claims and have the record to prove it? Check into Erie® Diminishing Deductible option, available in the Erie® Auto Plus Endorsement. For each consecutive policy year in which you don’t file a claim, your deductible will be reduced by $100 (up to a maximum amount of $500). Eligibility varies by state.

Youthful Driver & College Credit Discounts
If you’re unmarried, under the age of 21, and living with your parents you may qualify for Erie’s® Youthful Driver discount. The Youthful Longevity discount gives credit to young drivers who have been insured under another Erie® auto policy for the consecutive years of coverage with Erie®. Young drivers who have completed an accredited driver training course may also qualify for additional discounts.

Erie® Insurance “Xtras”

The next time you look over your auto policy, look for the “Xs” throughout the margins. These are all of the “Xtra Protection Features” that are automatically included with your Erie® auto policy. Clearly, it’s the little things that all add up to the bigger picture. Here are just a few of the things you’re covered for (and always have been):

Road Trip
Whether you’re headed across the state with the family or on a vacation across the country, Erie® has your back if something happens to your car and you find yourself stranded after a covered loss, let’s just say dinner and a hotel room are on us. Erie® offers up to $75 per passenger in the vehicle for travel expenses if you don’t reach your destination and aren’t close to home.

Paw Protection
Erie® cares about you—and your dogs and cats. If your pet is hurt in a covered accident while riding in your car, we’ll help cover the vet treatment costs up to $500 per pet (up to two pets, with a total limit of $1,000). Great news for Fido and Fluffy.

Locked Out?
You see your car keys on the front seat and the car is locked. If you find yourself in this situation and purchased Comprehensive or collision coverage, Erie® will reimburse you up to $75 for the cost of locksmith services on your insured car.

New Car
If you’re enjoying your new ride so much that you accidentally forgot to let your Agent know about it, we get it. Just make sure to let us know within seven days of the purchase so that you have the proper coverage.

Personal Items
Imagine you’ve just purchased a TV or finished a round of golf and then BAM! Someone rear-ends your car, smashing your new TV or the golf clubs that were in the trunk. Don’t worry. Erie® gives you up to $350 toward your personal items not covered by other insurance.
